In the WILEY X®, the ballistic performance such as the resistance to lens breakage is already ensured with the SELENITE™ lens that is only 2.0mm thick, and it achieves impact resistance that exceeds military specifications. The ability of the frame to hold the lens is very important, as it plays a part in the impact resistance of eyewear, but a misconception has been spread due to the so-called "shotgun performance" of eyewear being shot with a shotgun.
For example, if a baseball hits the eyewear while it is being worn, and the lens does not break due to the impact, but falls off the frame, it will be rated as dangerous. This is because there is a risk that the detached lens may press against the eyeball together with the ball, or that the edge of the lens may pierce the eyeball. However, if the eyewear is shot with a shotgun, even if the lens is blown off the frame, it will be rated as impact resistant as long as it does not break. It is certainly amazing that a lens does not break when hit by a shotgun, but an "unbroken lens" that rolls on the ground is nothing more and nothing less.
